Edit the photo you already have

A retouch, a background swap and a full costume change are different jobs. A retouch asks the model to add makeup and leave the rest alone. A background swap asks it to remove the room and paint a new one. A costume change asks it to redraw most of the frame. Mixing all three in one prompt makes it harder to tell which instruction caused a bad result.

The cheapest workflow is sequential: first fix the background, then add makeup, then add a costume only if you still need one. Each step is easier to judge, and you can stop as soon as the image is good enough. It also gives you a clean version to fall back to if a later edit goes wrong.

Generated makeup often looks airbrushed because the prompt asks for “flawless skin”. Ask for realistic pores, natural shadows and the original skin tone instead. If the source photo has a strong colour cast, correct it before uploading; the model will otherwise carry that cast into the new image.

Keep the face instruction explicit: preserve the recognizable facial identity, facial proportions, skin tone and natural anatomy. If the edit is supposed to change the face (for example, a full skull makeup look), say how much of the face may change and what must remain. Ambiguity is where identity drift starts.

A background swap fails when the new light does not match the subject. A person lit by a phone flash will not look natural in a candlelit Victorian garden unless the prompt also relights the face. Name the direction, colour and softness of the new light, and ask for natural shadows on the subject.

Keep the background simple enough to read on a phone. A porch with pumpkins, a foggy garden and a dark studio are easier to render convincingly than a crowded party. If you need a party scene, generate it as a separate background and composite it, or accept that the first attempt is a mood board rather than a final image.

Only edit photos you have the right to use. Do not add a costume or makeup to a person in a way that suggests they attended an event, endorsed a product or consented to a look they have never seen. For minors, do not upload the photo at all.

Label the result as AI-edited when the edit could be mistaken for a real photograph. A subtle colour grade may not need a label; a full costume or a changed background does. Keep the original file so you can show what was real if someone asks.
